Imho the egypt bricks should be solid purley because there are no other
solid images for the egypt theme (and the metal plates don't fit in very
nicley) Sand could quite easily be used if diggable ground is needed so 
I can't see any disadvantage, also they have a beveled edge which makes
the look 3D afaics - I think this has been discussed before but I can't
remember the conclusion...

On the other hand pipes look to me to be diggable because they do not
have rivets. My thinking is that if it has rivets it is solid. Or, if it
is not metal then if it is beveled then it is solid.

How will users be able to add their own graphics?
